Chord-Calculator.com is a free educational website providing browser-based music theory tools and educational content about chord construction, interval mathematics, harmonic function, and scale theory — built for musicians, composers, students, and educators who want to understand how chords work, not just which notes they contain.

The site was created and is maintained by Liam, a music theorist and chord tools developer with expertise in chord construction, interval theory, harmonic function, scale theory, and music theory pedagogy.


Why This Site Exists

Most chord reference tools online are lookups. You type a chord name, you get a list of notes. That is useful as a quick reference — but it does not explain anything. It does not tell you why a major chord sounds bright and stable, why a dominant seventh chord creates tension that pulls toward resolution, why an augmented chord sounds suspended and unresolved, or why the same three notes can be named differently depending on their context in a progression.

Those answers all come from the same place: interval mathematics. Every chord is defined by a specific pattern of intervals — distances between notes measured in semitones and named according to their position in the scale. Understanding those patterns transforms chord knowledge from a collection of memorised shapes into a coherent system that generates and explains every chord in Western harmony.

  • Interval Calculator — enter any two notes and receive the interval name, semitone count, and its role in chord and scale construction
